Why it matters

Why your dryer vent needs cleaning

Every load pushes warm, damp air and fine lint out through the vent behind your dryer. The lint trap catches most of it, but not all. Over months, the rest builds up along the duct walls, in bends and at the exterior hood, until air can no longer move freely.

A restricted vent makes your dryer run longer and hotter for every load. That wastes energy, wears out the heating element and blower, and leaves lint sitting next to a heat source. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, an estimated 2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year, and failure to clean is the leading cause.

Cleaning the vent is one of the simplest ways to make laundry faster and your home safer. Tri-Valley Clean clears the full vent run, from the back of the dryer to the outside of your home, and checks the airflow before we leave.

Warning signs

Signs your dryer vent needs cleaning

Noticing one or more of these? A blocked or crushed vent is the usual cause.

  • Clothes need more than one cycle to dry
  • The dryer or the laundry room gets unusually hot
  • Clothes come out hot to the touch or smell musty
  • A burning smell when the dryer is running
  • Lint collecting around the door seal or behind the dryer
  • The exterior vent flap barely opens while the dryer runs
  • Visible lint, nests or debris at the outside vent hood
  • More than a year since the vent was last cleaned

If you smell burning, stop using the dryer and call us or a qualified technician before running it again.

Our process

How we clean your dryer vent

A typical visit takes about an hour, depending on the length and route of the vent.

01

Inspect the setup

We look at the dryer, the transition hose, the vent route and the exterior hood, and note anything crushed, kinked or disconnected.

02

Disconnect and protect

We carefully pull the dryer out, disconnect it and protect the floor and walls around the work area.

03

Brush the full run

A rotary brush system works through the duct to loosen lint packed into bends and along the duct walls.

04

Vacuum and clear

Loosened lint is pulled out with a high-powered vacuum, and the exterior hood and flap are cleared by hand.

05

Reconnect and test

We reconnect the dryer, run it, and check airflow at the exterior vent so you know air is moving freely.

06

Report back

We tell you what we found and let you know if any part of the vent should be repaired or replaced.

Benefits

What a clean dryer vent does for you

Faster drying

Air moves freely again, so loads dry in one cycle instead of two.

Lower energy use

Shorter cycles mean the dryer uses less electricity or gas for every load.

Less fire risk

Removing built-up lint takes fuel away from a heat source.

Longer dryer life

A dryer that isn’t overheating puts less strain on its heating element, thermostat and blower.

Fresher laundry

Moist air leaves the house properly, so clothes and the laundry room don’t pick up a musty smell.

Peace of mind

You know the whole vent was cleared and tested, not just the lint trap.

Questions

Dryer vent cleaning questions

Quick answers. Call or text (925) 678-5529 if your question isn’t here.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

Once a year is a good rule for most homes. Large households that run the dryer every day, homes with pets, and long or complicated vent runs may need cleaning every six to nine months.

How long does dryer vent cleaning take?

Most homes take about an hour. Long vent runs, roof exits or second-floor laundry rooms can take longer.

Isn’t cleaning the lint trap enough?

No. The lint trap catches most lint, but some always passes through and builds up inside the vent and at the exterior hood. Only cleaning the vent itself removes it.

Will it make a mess in my home?

No. We protect the area around the dryer and vacuum the lint out as we brush, so it doesn’t end up in your laundry room.

Do you clean roof and second-floor dryer vents?

Yes, in most cases. Let us know where your vent exits when you request a quote so we can plan the visit. A side-wall vent is $349, and roof access on a one-story home adds $149.

What if my vent is damaged?

If we find a crushed, disconnected or unsafe section, we’ll show you and recommend what should be repaired or replaced.

Do you clean dryer vents in apartment communities and HOAs?

Yes. We schedule vent cleaning across units and shared laundry rooms, and can add it to a regular commercial service plan.

Which areas do you serve?

We clean dryer vents in San Ramon, Danville, Dublin, Pleasanton, Blackhawk, Alamo, Livermore, Walnut Creek, Lafayette and Orinda.
